The Public Library was built in 1864 in a Scottish Baronial style that sits oddly and rather magnificently in the middle of an Indian park. It is the largest library in Uttar Pradesh.

The building served as the seat of the Legislative Council of the North-Western Provinces before it became a library, which accounts for its scale.

The collection runs past a hundred thousand volumes and includes newspaper archives that researchers still work through.
